Connect Claude Code to RankRight

⏱ 5 minUpdated 2026-10-22

Ask about your clients in plain English, and get answers from your live RankRight data. One key, one command, no code.

  • Read-only by default
  • Your org's data only
  • Revoke anytime
How Claude Code talks to RankRight You ask Claude Code a question. Claude Code calls the RankRight MCP server over HTTPS with your API key. RankRight checks the key's scopes and answers from your organization's clients and AI Visibility data. You >_ Claude Code MCP SERVER RankRight Clients Webhooks Reports & more asks rrk_ key
Every call carries your key, so Claude can do exactly what the key allows and nothing more.

Set it up in three steps

You need Claude Code installed and a RankRight account. Only organization owners can mint keys.

1 Mint an API key ~2 min

  1. Open Account → API keys (/account/api-keys).
  2. Name it after the person, e.g. jane-claude-code.
  3. Leave read ticked. Add write or jobs only if this person should make changes (compare scopes).
  4. Click Mint key and copy the rrk_… token. It's shown once, so treat it like a password.

Not the owner? Ask them to mint a key for you and send it privately. Everyone should have their own key so access can be revoked person by person. Want events pushed to you instead of asking? See webhooks.

2 Add RankRight to Claude Code ~1 min

Paste this into a terminal (PowerShell, macOS or Linux) and replace rrk_YOUR_KEY with your token:

claude mcp add --transport http --scope user rankright https://app.rankright.dev/api/v1/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer rrk_YOUR_KEY"

--scope user makes RankRight available in every folder. Without it, it only works in the folder where you ran the command.

3 Check it and ask away ~1 min

Start claude and type /mcp. rankright should show as connected (claude mcp list works from the terminal too).

Then just talk. Claude picks the right RankRight tools itself. The first time, Claude Code asks permission to use them. Choose "don't ask again" if you're happy with the key's scopes.

Try these first

Click one to copy it, then paste it into Claude Code. Swap in your own client names.

Pick the right scopes

The server enforces scopes on every call, so a key can never do more than you allowed.

Recommended start

read

Look things up and summarise. Any attempt to change something is refused with a 403.

Hands-on

read + write

Also add and edit clients, and manage webhooks.

Full

+ jobs

Also start background work. Scripts using the same key can start jobs like data exports through the REST API. AI-powered work uses your monthly allowance.

Questions

The short answers. The full reference is in the API docs.

What is the RankRight MCP server?
An endpoint at https://app.rankright.dev/api/v1/mcp that speaks the Model Context Protocol, the open standard Claude uses to call tools. It has the same permissions, org isolation and rate limits as the RankRight REST API.
Can Claude change my data?
Only if the key has the write scope. With a read-only key, the server refuses every change whatever Claude asks for. Anything a write key does shows up in RankRight straight away, the same as clicking in the app.
Who can mint a key?
Organization owners, under Account, then API keys. Each org can have up to five active keys. Other team members ask their owner for a key of their own.
Does it use my AI allowance?
Looking data up doesn't. AI-powered actions, like running background jobs, draw from the same monthly allowance as the web app. If it runs out, those calls return 402 until the 1st or a top-up.
Does it work with apps other than Claude Code?
Yes. Any MCP client that supports HTTP can use the same URL plus the header Authorization: Bearer rrk_... Apps that sign in with OAuth instead, like Claude.ai custom connectors, only need the URL. They open a RankRight consent page where you choose the scopes. Viewers can't approve these.
How do I disconnect or revoke a key?
Remove it from Claude Code with: claude mcp remove rankright --scope user. To cut a key off everywhere, an owner revokes it under Account, then API keys. It stops working immediately.
Something's not working. What should I check?
401 or failed to connect: the token is wrong, revoked, or picked up a space or line break when pasting, so remove and re-add it. 'This API key is read-only': working as intended; mint a key with write if this person should make changes. 429: too many calls a minute; Claude retries after a moment.
